Germany CH-47F VIE | 2025-Present

    As a software engineer at Logistic Services International, Inc., I currently have the opportunity to work on Germany CH-47F VIE, a maintenance training simulation developed in Unreal Engine 5 for the German Air Force. This trainer teaches both active-duty maintenance technicians and pilots how to operate the equipment properly and respond to emergencies and malfunctions. To accomplish this, a comprehensive 3D model of the interior of such ships is created in CH-47F, and detailed animations are used to illustrate the functions of various components to a high degree of accuracy.

    The instruction in this project is given through a multitude of lessons, which focus on the proper operation of the equipment and panels the crew will interact with on the aircraft while on active duty. These lessons are comprised of step-by-step instructions that describe what action must be performed and give frequent hints as to how to complete the action. Students will learn how to power the aircraft on and off; how to operate onboard display systems, light systems, cargo hooks, and other systems; and how to diagnose and resolve issues with these systems. Once the student clicks on a component of the 3D modeled aircraft, they can press a button to simulate an action and proceed to the next step. However, if they perform the wrong action, a pop-up will display, informing them that they have made an incorrect selection. The student must perform the correct action before they can proceed to the next step in the lesson.​ There are a handful of tools built into the simulation which the student may use to assist them during a lesson, including a highlight tool that illuminates the correct component for that step. These features are designed to facilitate a simulated environment that is conducive to the student's learning so that they may effectively operate the CH-47F aircraft in the field.

    My main responsibilities on the Germany CH-47F VIE project are to develop both backend and frontend systems for various components used in lessons, as well as to create lesson content. By component, I mean a unit such as a maintenance panel or a display. For each of these components, I ensure that the frontend and backend communicate efficiently and that visual changes occur in response. Regarding the lesson content, I created lessons based on the documentation provided to me by our Subject Matter Experts, ensuring that each step contained the appropriate information needed for the student to successfully complete it. I also verified that the animations and displays in each lesson were functioning properly in order to simulate the real-world aircraft properly and to provide a valuable learning experience.
